About our project
My friends, Whitney Miller, Addi Jones, Addie halter, and I all got together with Mrs. Amones, a teacher from New Palestine Junior High. She got with us with this project and we all got together to try and make it happen. We put boxes together for special ed kids to help with their fine motor skills. All of us one day went out and went to dollar general to buy items for all three boxes.
FIRST ROUND
In the first box, The color sort, we have red, purple, yellow, and blue of all different items. We have puff balls, crayons, necklaces, ribbon, and many more items for the kids to separate into their colors. Then out side of the box we have 4 bowls of the colors. Then when the kids separate the colors they will put it into the corresponding color bowl.
The second box is called rice findings. In this box we have two small bags of rice at the bottom and we did small items the kids will easily find. We have legos, army men, a toy car, plastic butterflies, small numbers and letters, and many more. We have printed out images of what all is in the box. Once the kids find each item they will match it up with the printed out image in front of them.
Finally the last box we have is Everyday Findings. This box has items in it that you find at your house everyday, or will use everyday. We have 4 groups of items you use in your everyday life. Such as silver wear and a cup, a hair brush and hair ties, toothbrush and tooth paste, and lastly a notebook with colored pencils. We also printed out everything that is in the box so when they pull it out of the box they can match it up with the image in front of them. We also have 4 mini boxes that they can separate each group into the 4 groups they have.
Our plan is to go to the NPJH first and introduce our project there. Since Mrs. Amones gave us this project to take into action we will go into her class first. We will stay and help the kids if there is any help needed. Then if they love the idea and they love doing it all of us are wanting to do the project again but expand our destinations. All of us will make the same boxes and have the same idea behind it, but will go our New Palestine High School classes and start going to the under privileged schools and helping with their kids.
SECOND ROUND
For our second round of boxes we got three more to help out Mrs. Amones and her class. We went to dollar general again and bought three more boxes. In one of them we cut out squares on the lid of the box with letters just above the cut outs. Then we have mini squares with letters on them and they will pick out a square and drop it into the box with the corresponding letter on the lid.
For our second box we have 10-12 pipe cleaners that are different colors with nothing one them. Then with those pipe cleaners we have little boxes filled with beads and the color of the pipe cleaner on the little box. They will take a little box filled with beads and match it up with the color of the pipe cleaner. We will give them an image of a pattern we want them to put on the pipe cleaner.
The third and final box we have images of patterns with corresponding cubes with them. We have 10-12 baggies of blocks and corresponding colors. They will take the cubes out and connects them to make the pattern on the image in front of them.

THIRD ROUND
We did four more boxes for our third round instead of three, but had different items in each box with all the same intentions.
The first box is "Pom Pom Placement". When we had two ic cube trays that you put in your freezer, with 3 different bags of Pom Pom balls with tweezers to help them brag the Pom Pom balls. There task for this box is to is grab a small, medium, or even large Pom Pom ball with the tweezers and place into one of the slots in the ice cube tray. There is no specific pattern to the ice cube tray, it is just where ever they want to put them. After the fill all of them they will empty it out and try a something different.
The second box we have made is called "lock and keys". This box is exactly as it sounds. We have 4 or 5 ordinary locks with all the same keys in the box. They will grab a random key with a lock also and try to unlock the lock.
The third box we have "Fill in the Number". In this box we have multiple popsicle sicks with the numbers written on one side with 1-12 on them. Then there is a baggy filled different colored clothes pins with different numbers on the clothes pins. They will have to pick out a popsicle stick with all the different colored clothes pins in front of them. They will read the numbers on the stick and see what number they need to fill in. Once figure out what number is missing they will search through the clothes pins to find that number. Once they find the correct number they will clip the clothes pin on the stick to where the number is missing.
Lastly on our last box is called "Bead Patterns". This last box we put together are made with different colored pipe cleaners with different colored and sizes of beads. We have laminated pictures of a color of a pipe cleaner with a specific bead pattern on it with a 3 by 5 card with a certain color of pipe cleaner with what beads to pick out and put on the pipe cleaner. They all will be given a different image of the pattern on the pipe cleaner and a 3 by 5 crd with instructions. Then they will have to search through the box for their beads and pipe cleaners they need to fit the image in front of them.

FOURTH ROUND
These task boxes have been a huge success by Mrs. Amones so this time we decided to expand our horizons. My group and I went to Ms. Westerman in the high school and she asked if we could make her some boxes for her classes. We all were more than happy to make some for her. So she gave us a pamphlet on what she wanted and lists for ideas on how to make more. This round we made 3 for her.
On the first box we made a laundry sort. For this one there are 3 gold mini boxes in the task box with cut out images of three categories of clothes. The three categories are underwear, shirts, and pants. So the kids will have to take out of the three golden crates and put them in front of them with the cut out pictures scattered in front of them also. The kids will have to organize all the images and put them into the correct box.
On the second box we made a utensil sort. This box is a lot like the first box but with utensils. They have 3 or 4 knives, spoons, and forks with three boxes with an image on which utensil to put in the box. The kids will have the three boxes in front of them and the utensils will be in the big box in front of them. As the pull out a random utensil they will put it into their mini boxes matching with the image on the box.
On the third box we made a vocab spelling project. This box we have written multiple words and cut and laminated them and bought 4 etch-scetch in front of them. They will have to pick out a random work from the box and try to write out the word on the board. Once they write the word Ms. Westerman checks and sees if its correct. If the word is correct hey will erase it and pick out a new word to try and spell.

FIFTH ROUND
Our group and I took a break over the winter because we did not have this class until spring time. Once class started we got straight to work to start again on the tasks boxes. We went to Mrs. Westermans class to get ideas and talk to her personally about what will help her kids succeed. My group and I got a lot of great ideas on how to help her class. My group and I went to the Dollar Store and Walmart to get materials. When we went to the stores we got little cubes to write letters on, tissue paper for modge podge, and just found other ideas for the future. When we talked to Mrs Westermann we stayed away from the big materials because she wanted matching images that we can fit into folders to save space.
My group and I went to work on what she wanted. We stuck to three different easy categories they can learn from. We printed out pictures of a kitchen, living room, and a bathroom. We are going to print these small images out to laminate them and put velcro on the back so they could stick to the paper in front of them. My group and I did this for all three categories.
When we went to the store and bought the tissue paper for small cardboard tubes. The tissue paper is yellow, blue, red and green. To stick the tissue paper on the tubes we took modge podge and stuck it on there neatly. On the side of this project are small puff balls that coordinate the colored tubes so the students can match the colors to the tubes. For the finishing project they students will have 4 different colored tubes in front of them as well as assortment of 12-15 puff balls. Their goal is to take a puff ball one by one and put it into the correct colored tube.
